초록본문(Abstract) A substantial portion of mainstream research in number theory over the past several decades has been concerned with the theory of motives, as manifested in the conjectures of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer, Bloch, Beilinson, and Kato. In this lecture, we will interpret this theory as a linearized, `virtual' theory of Diophantine equations, and describe recents attempts to refine it using ideas of homotopy theory.
