- In many countries in Asia, mathematical research, by modern standards, has a relatively short history. This panel discussion was to discuss the challenges and difficulties that the mathematicians in these countries face, and to plan possible joint efforts to remedy the situation. Each of the presidents of the ten participating mathematical societies in Asia briefly described the ongoing activities and the plans of his/her society, and discussed a range of issues and explore concrete measures to increase joint activities in the region. The activities of the European Mathematical Society (EMS) were carefully looked at in this regard.

The AMC 2013 to Be Held in Busan, Korea

The AMC (Asian Mathematical Conference) 2013 will be held in Busan, Korea. The AMC series is a major SEAMS (South East Asian Mathematical Society) conference, held every 4-5 years and hosted by countries in Asia. The first AMC was held in Hong Kong (1990), the second in Thailand (1995), the third in the Philippines (2000), the fourth in Singapore (2005), and the latest was Malaysia (2009).

Encouraged by several SEAMS Council members, the KMS board decided to make a bid to host 2013 AMC in Busan. Prof. Rosihan M. Ali (Chair of the SEAMS) invited Korean delegations to the SEAMS Council Meeting which was held at June 22th, 2009 in Kuala Lumpur during the AMC 2009. The four-member KMS delegation consisting of Prof. Dohan Kim (President of the KMS), Prof. Hyungju Park (Chair of the KMS Int¡¯l Exchanges Committee), Prof. Seok-Jin Kang (Member of the KMS Int¡¯l Exchanges Committee) and Prof. Dosang Joe (Secretary General of the KMS), attended the meeting with Professor Hyungju Park delivering a bidding presentation to host AMC 2013. The SEAMS Council members voted for Seoul over Indonesia at the meeting, and the KMS received an official letter with regard to the next host city of the AMC 2013.

One of the most important factors to consider during the preparation process for AMC 2013 is the ICM (International Congress of Mathematicians), the world's largest math conference. Since Seoul has been recommended to host the ICM in 2014, hosting AMC 2013 is expected to help the KMS to assess the effectiveness and adequacy of its preparation for ICM 2014. It will also have a positive impact on Asian math community to expand its activities to the scale of the ECM (European Congress of Mathematics).

Seoul Recommended to Host 2014 ICM

Seoul has been recommended to host the ICM (International Congress of Mathematicians), the world's largest math conference, in 2014. The 11 members of Executive Committee of the IMU (International Mathematical Union) held the annual meeting during April 18~19, 2009 in Fuzhou, China, and voted for Seoul over Montreal, Canada and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on April 19, 2009. The decision will be ratified at the 17th IMU General Assembly in Bangalore, India, in August 2010.

The ICM, which takes place once every four years, is attended by an average of 4,000 mathematicians from about 100 countries. The Fields Medal, mathematics' equivalent of the Nobel Prize, is awarded by the host country's head of state during the opening ceremony of the nine-day congress.

This recommendation shows that the international math community has recognized the rapid growth of mathematics in Korea and its potential, also the great support by the government. And it would be an opportunity for Korean mathematics to leap to the next level.

Seoul's $2 million travel assistance program to invite 1,000 mathematicians from developing countries to the ICM and plans to have North Korea host some of the satellite conferences helped it differentiate itself from rival countries.

2014 ICM Site Committee Visited Korea to Inspect Seoul's Bid

Three members of ICM (International Congress of Mathematicians) Site Committee from Executive Committee of the IMU (International Mathematical Union), president Laszlo Lovasz, secretary Martin Groetschel and vice-president Zhiming Ma visited Korea from Feb. 23 to Feb. 26, 2009 to inspect Seoul's bid for the 2014 ICM.

Main schedule has proceeded as planned. On Feb. 24, the Site Committee members met with Prime Minister, Mr. Han Seung-soo and Minister of the Prime Minister's Office, Mr. Kwon Tae-shin at the Government Complex, and toured the COEX facilities, the proposed congress venue. A welcome reception was held at SamcheongGak, and Korean mathematicians, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, Ambassador of the Republic of Hungary were cordially invited along with president & CEO of Seoul Tourism Organization. Prof. Hyungju Park, the Chair of the Committee for SEOUL ICM 2014, made a 20 minute presentation.

On Feb. 25, the Site Committee members met with directors of mathematics research institutes in Korea, Mayor of Soul, Mr. Oh Se-hoon and Minister of Education, Science and Technology Mr. Ahn Byong Man. In press interview, the Site Committee members said they were deeply impressed by the Korean government and mathematics community's commitment to hosting the 2014 ICM. "Although it is impossible to compare Seoul's strengths and weaknesses to its rivals as we have not visited them yet, the great support from the Korean mathematics community and the government is surely one of its strengths." IMU president Laszlo Lovasz said. "Seoul's plan to invite 1,000 mathematicians from developing countries is another strong point, as we have never been able to sponsor trips for so many in the history of ICM." IMU secretary Martin Groetschel said. "Hosting the ICM has a great impact on the country's mathematicians and young students." IMU vice-president Zhiming Ma said.

Along with main schedule, the Site Committee members visited Korea's tourist attractions, include Secret Garden in Changdeokgung Palace, UNESCO's World Heritage, Ho-Am Art Museum and Korean Folk Village. And the Site Committee members watched NANTA, one of the well-known musical performances in Korea. Those cultural attractions and events represented Seoul as an active cultural center, where tradition and modern culture co-exist.

Seoul is competing against Rio de Janeiro and Montreal for the rights to host the world's largest mathematics congress. The Site Committee members to visit those cities and the Executive Committee of IMU is expected to pick the host city for the 2014 ICM in late April, and the decision will be ratified at the congress in Bangalore, India, in August, 2010.
