Recent Rapid Growth

  • In 2006, Korea ranked 12th in SCIE publications in mathematics, more than doubling its publications in less than 10 years.

  • A successful model for many IMU member countries with relatively short history of mathematical research in modern standards.

    Early Pioneers

  • Ree, Rimhak (1922-2005)

    - Research Areas: Group theory, Lie algebras
    - Highlights
            * Fellow, Royal Society of Canada
            * Professor, University of British Columbia, Canada
    - Ree, Rimhak studied mathematics in Korea and taught briefly at Seoul National University before going to Canada for graduate study. He became a world authority on group theory and originated the so-called 'Ree Group' in the 1960s. His achievements in research in some 29 simple groups, including the two found in the 1960s, made him a gigantic figure in world mathematics circles and rank as important accomplishments in the world history of mathematics. Over 90 research papers on Ree Groups were published during the period 1984-1994, and he is considered one of the world's greatest contributors to group theory research, alongside Cauchy and Galois. At the age of 40 he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
